ENA mapped an empathy gap between real geriatric caregiving and training narratives

Behdokht Kiafar, Salam Daher, Shayla Sharmin, Asif Ahmmed, Ladda Thiamwong, Roghayeh Leila Barmaki

6th International Conference on Quantitative Ethnography (ICQE 2024)

Interviews with ten nursing assistants showed different relational patterns in accounts of real caregiving and prior training. ENA linked empathy strongly with communication in real-life narratives, while training narratives emphasized communication with critical thinking and gave empathy a weaker role.

Learners valued adaptive scaffolds when suggestions fit their writing strategy

Tongguang Li, Jionghao Lin, Sehrish Iqbal, Zachari Swiecki, Yi-Shan Tsai, Yizhou Fan, Dragan Gašević

5th International Conference on Quantitative Ethnography (ICQE 2023)

ENA linked university learners' reported writing strategies with whether they perceived automated scaffolds as adaptive. Reading first and then writing connected most strongly with perceived adaptivity and higher performance, but the small interview sample supports association rather than causation.

ENA turned nursing students' movement traces into interpretable team patterns

Gloria Milena Fernandez-Nieto, Roberto Martinez-Maldonado, Kirsty Kitto, Simon Buckingham Shum

11th International Conference on Learning Analytics and Knowledge (LAK21)

A LAK21 study applied ENA to wearable positioning traces from 25 nursing students in clinical simulations. Educators could build meaningful accounts from the networks after a short orientation, but often mistook ENA geometry for the physical ward layout.

Parsimonious code removal sought simpler ENA models without losing interpretive alignment

Yeyu Wang, Zachari Swiecki, A. R. Ruis, David Williamson Shaffer

2nd International Conference on Quantitative Ethnography (ICQE 2020)

How analysts can identify smaller ENA code sets while protecting both explanatory performance and the alignment between quantitative features and qualitative meaning. The demonstration identified reduced models likely to retain explanatory power and interpretive alignment, showing that simplification can be evaluated rather than improvised. Success against one established model does not justify deleting codes solely for visual neatness or guarantee that the same criterion preserves meaning in another study.

Directed ENA retained order that standard co-occurrence networks could miss

Ariel Fogel, Zachari Swiecki, Cody Marquart, Zhiqiang Cai, Yeyu Wang, Jais Brohinsky, Amanda Siebert-Evenstone, Brendan Eagan, A. R. Ruis, David Williamson Shaffer

2nd International Conference on Quantitative Ethnography (ICQE 2020)

How ENA can account for both interdependence and the order in which coded events occur. Standard ENA did not represent the qualitative distinction in the demonstration as clearly, while the directed model captured the ordered difference between commanders. A two-case demonstration establishes methodological possibility, not general superiority; direction is meaningful only when ordering, windows, and event semantics support it.

Trajectory visualization recovered temporal information hidden by aggregate ENA networks

Jais Brohinsky, Cody Marquart, Junting Wang, A. R. Ruis, David Williamson Shaffer

2nd International Conference on Quantitative Ethnography (ICQE 2020)

How successive partial networks can be represented as trajectories through an ENA space without discarding the aggregate model. The trajectory view represented temporal information that the aggregate display omitted and produced patterns consistent with the established qualitative account. The paper introduces visualization and interpretation rather than a complete inferential framework for testing arbitrary path differences in trajectory space.
